Symptoms of Cervical Polyps

>> Saturday, June 20, 2009

by: James Pendergraft

A cervical polyp is a benign tumor that is found on the surface of the cervical canal. They can cause irregular menstrual bleeding, but more often they show no symptoms. The cause of this type of cancer is not fully understood by the experts. It may result from an infection or from a long term or chronic inflammation, an abnormal response to an increase in the estrogen levels, and in the congestion of blood vessels in the cervical canal.

The diagnosis of cervical polyps is relatively easy, since they can be easily seen by a physician. They appear to be smooth stalks with a red or purple color and they protrude from the cervical canal.

The Common Symptoms

Normally, there would be no symptoms for cervical polyps but at times this disease will be characterized by:

* Abnormal vaginal bleeding that occurs between menstrual periods, after menopause, after sexual intercourse, and after douching.
* Cervical polyps may be inflamed but they rarely become infected
* Abnormally heavy periods or menorrhagia
* White or yellow mucus discharge, often called leucorrhea
* There are only a few known symptoms of this infection and sometimes these are even unnoticeable. A woman needs to have an annual check up to evaluate her reproductive health.

Risk Factors and Preventive Measures

* The risk factor of having cervical polyps increases in women with diabetes mellitus and recurrent vaginitis and cervicitis. Cervical polyps never really occur before the onset of menstruation. It is usually seen in women of reproductive age. The most susceptible to the disease are women aged 40 to 50 years old. It is also said that cervical polyps can be found on incidences that trigger the production of hormones. Pregnant women have higher risks due to the changes in the hormone levels, possibly from the increased production of circulating hormones too.

* There are measures that can help prevent the infection and these are:

* Wear cotton underpants or panty hose with a cotton crotch. This helps prevent the accumulation of excess heat and moisture. Heat and moisture makes a woman susceptible to vaginal and cervical infections.

* Have your partner wear a condom every intercourse. This minimizes the risk of a sexually transmitted infection.

Treating Cervical Polyps

* Through a simple operation, cervical polyps can be removed. The polyp will be twisted and gently removed during the operation. In one method, a surgical string is attached around the base and the shoot is cut off. The base will be removed through electrocautery or laser treatment. Following the operation, patients are advised to take in antibiotics even if there are no signs of infection. Some cervical polyps are not necessarily cancerous but they are still sent to the laboratory for further analysis. Also, it is fairly impossible for the polyps to grow back but there are incidences of recurrence.

Preventing Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

>> Friday, June 19, 2009

by: James Pendergraft

Stretch marks are said to be related to hormonal changes that happens during puberty, pregnancy, and muscle building. Stretch marks are the off-color scarring on the skin that is caused by the tearing of the dermis. This can disappear eventually but not fully. The possibility of developing stretch marks increases among pregnant women. In fact, 75 to 90 percent of women will develop stretch marks during their pregnancy.

For pregnant women, stretch marks will appear on the abdomen, the upper thighs, the buttocks, breasts, and the arms. The enormity and amount of the stretch marks will depend on the pregnant women’s total weight gain, genetic history, and the effort that these women put into preventing the stretch marks. What should pregnant women do to prevent stretch marks?

Preventing Stretch Marks

If there is one thing that many pregnant women don’t want to have as a souvenir of their pregnancy, it would be stretch marks. Genetics play an important role in whether or not a woman is susceptible to developing stretch marks. So if your mother ever got stretch marks when she was pregnant, there is a big possibility that you would get them also. There are many means in which you can prevent stretch marks from developing. Even if you are inclined to having them, you could limit the possibility by just following some simple guidelines. Here’s what you should do:

* Develop a healthy diet. You should control your weight gain to a recommended range of 25 to 35 pounds. This will not only contribute to the general health of your skin but it will also improve the health of the baby. A controlled weight gain will minimize the stretching of the skin and therefore the enormity of the stretch marks will also be minimized.

* Locate the possible areas in which stretch marks will develop or the areas that you want to prevent stretch marks from appearing. Massage these areas using a body brush or a wash cloth to increase the circulation of the blood in that area.

* Hydrate yourself. Drink plenty of water as this helps in improving the health of the skin and the health of the baby too.

* Take vitamins such as Vitamin E. This will ensure the health of your skin.

* Moisturize your skin effectively especially during the first and second trimester. There are many oils and creams that are available for you to use and you can use any of them even without the prescription of your doctor or dermatologist. This will keep your skin elastic and supple as these act as food for your skin. The formula in these creams will enhance the production of collagen, supports the dermis, and still keep the skin intact despite the rigorous stretching.

* Don’t forget to take care of your skin even after pregnancy in the post partum period. You will lose weight dramatically during this period and your skin will be more susceptible to stretch marks.

If you still develop stretch marks, don’t stress yourself just yet. This will become unnoticeable over time. If you are still conscious about these unwanted marks, you could visit the dermatologist for a skin treatment.

How to Treat Stretch Marks

>> Thursday, June 18, 2009

by: James Pendergraft

Stretch marks are theoretically small tears that form under the tissue that supports the skin. When they are overstretched, they will appear as purplish red streaks that look unsightly on the skin. Women with stretch marks are constantly seeking ways to eliminate the marks.

Eliminating Stretch Marks

Many women sought the help of creams and oils that are marketed in beauty supply stores. These creams contain large amounts of collagen that contributes to the elasticity of the skin. As the body ages, collagen becomes depleted making you more prone to having stretch marks. When the skin is treated with the cream, it will receive the needed amount of collagen to help it tighten and in turn prevent stretch marks from developing.

Another alternative for reducing or eliminating stretch marks is to seek the help of a dermatologist. These treatments are:

* Retin A Treatment
* Microdermabrasion Treatment
* Laser Treatment

Retin-A Treatment

The Retin-A treatment is applicable for stretch marks that are less than a year old when the stretch marks are still red or pinkish in color. Results are not 100 percent guaranteed. This treatment only works for some and it will not work on silver or pale marks or to those marks that are over a year old already. The cost depends only on the sheer size of the mark and if the treatment is covered by insurance. This should not be used by pregnant or nursing women because the treatment can be absorbed through the skin and it can cause harm to the baby.

Microdermabrasion Treatment

In a Microdermabrasion treatment, micro crystals and other chemicals are sprayed on the skin under high pressure at high speed and with the use of a vacuum device. This treatment is done at multiple sessions, preferably 10 to 12 times for a period of 3 to 4 months. The process might be painful and the skin will be bruised after the treatment and the treated skin should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

Laser Treatment

The laser treatment is a very effective clinical treatment for any skin conditions including stretch marks. Pulsed dye lasers are used to remove the stretch marks. The process could also be very painful and anesthesia would be needed. Following the treatment, bruising is observed as well as peeling, scabbing, and redness of the skin. Multiple sessions of at least 8 sessions are also needed and a single session would cost approximately $700. This treatment is probably the most effective when it comes to removing stretch marks but effective results are not guaranteed for every type of person. For the most successful outcome, you need to find a good dermatologist or surgeon with effective equipment. The combination is crucial because an overdone process will create more scars to the skin while the underdone process will show no effective results at all.

All About Benign Breast Cancer

>> Wednesday, June 17, 2009

by: James Pendergraft

There are many causes of benign breast cancer. These are the changes in the breast tissue, any breast infection or injury, and any medicine that are taken that have caused the lumps or the breast pain. Changes in the tissues of a woman’s breasts occur with the fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone during the menstrual cycle.

Types of Benign Breast Conditions

There are many types of lumps and conditions in the breast that are benign and it is very important to know them so that you will not have to be unnecessarily alarmed when you find a lump in one or both of your breasts.

* Fibrocystic changes. This increases the size and tenderness in the breast before the menstrual period. These lumps are just milk ducts and surrounding tissues that have grown and dilated to form cysts. The lumps that are formed may be hard or rubbery. Fibrocystic changes are often noticeable among women in their 40s.

* Simple cysts. These are just fluid filled cysts that change in size with the woman’s menstrual cycles.

* Fibroademonas. These are considered the most common benign tumors in a female breast. They are solid, round, and rubbery, and they can move freely in the breast once they are pushed upon and it is usually painless. This type of benign breast condition is due to the excessive formation of the milk producing glands and the surrounding breast tissue. This condition will most likely occur in women between the age of 20 and 30.

* Intraductal papillomas. This condition is characterized by small, wart-like growths in the lining of the mammary duct near the nipple area and women between the age of 45 and 50 are the most likely to be affected.

* Traumatic fatnecrosis. This condition will occur if a trauma like an injury occurs in the breast and the characteristics of the lumps are round, firm, hard, single, and usually painless.

What You Should Do If You Find A Lump

Once you discover a lump in your breast you should immediately see a physician because it might be a benign breast cancer condition. It is recommended to see a doctor right away if you find the following in your breasts:

* An area that is distinctly different from another area in either breasts
* A lump or a thickening near the breast or the underarm that is persistent
* A change in the size, shape, and contour of the breast
* A mass or lump in your breast
* Changes in the feel or appearance of the skin on the breast or the nipple.
* They are dimpled, puckered, and appear scaly or even inflamed.
* A bloody or clear fluid discharge from the nipples
* Redness in the skin on the nipple area or anywhere on the breast

A monthly examination of the breast is recommended to detect any abnormalities that are found in the breast and to prevent any development of benign breast lumps.

Top 5 Pains Women Should Not Ignore

>> Tuesday, June 16, 2009

by: James Pendergraft

There are many women who constantly experience aches and pains that they try to overlook because of being caught up with whatever they are doing or too busy to notice. A woman should know that minor pains that are constant could be a sign of something serious. Millions of women out there don’t always stop to listen to what their body is saying and end up suffering adverse consequences later.

What to Do with Women’s Body Pains

Always listen to what your body has to say so that you will not regret having missed the signs when you develop a more complicated condition later on. Here are the top pains that women commonly experience and the necessary action that you should take once you experience them:

* Stomach ache and discomfort. You can easily pass off these feelings as having a sensitive stomach or as a reaction to something that you have eaten but if you are already suffering from them regularly, you should make an appointment with your doctor for an evaluation. This could be a sign that you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcers, gallbladder, or pancreatic disease. Many doctors recommend fiber supplements for IBS. An extensive work up should be done by your Doctor before the diagnosis of IBS is ma.de.

* Pains in the head or neck area. This happens due to stress in the majority of situations This can indicate that you are suffering high blood pressure, aneurysms, or even different types of cancers in the neck area or head. This could be the precursor of stroke or other vascular abnormality.

* Painful periods. Monthly painful periods could indicate that a woman has endometriosis. Many women think that this is just a normal condition, but this is not at all true. If the medications that you take don’t help alleviate the pain, visit your doctor to find out if you have endometriosis. In this condition, women experience severe pain due to the accumulation of misplaced endometrial tissue on the tubes, ovaries, and bowel. It can lead to infertility and chronic pain if not treated. What you need to do is to consult a doctor that can diagnose and give you medications for your condition.

* A pain on the right side of the body. This could suggest the presence of gall stones. These are solid collections of cholesterol or calcium that build up in a sac under the liver or the gall bladder. They can cause blockage in your digestive system and leads to severe pain. A treatment for this is to remove the stones surgically.

* Sharp back pain. This could be due to bad posture and vertebral problems. It has a direct impact on your work and daily schedule and could lead to complications later on.

The aches and pains are not the only problems that women should notice. Experts also advise to never ignore petty things like fatigue, shortness of breath, or having blood in your urine. Every time you encounter an abnormality in your health, talk to your doctor immediately.

No Such Thing As Equality For Women

>> Sunday, June 14, 2009

by: Wendy Stenberg-Tendys

For years equal opportunity for women has been thrust at us at every opportunity. Many men speak all the right words, yet the scales are still heavily balanced against women. In the list of the top wealthiest people in the world, women have a very low profile. Only two women are found in the top 20, at numbers 12 and 13.

Women continue to hold a very low position in the places of power. "Discrimination is changing at a snail's pace and still needs to be challenged", says Nicole Brewer, of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

"Women are paid less than men for the same work", says author Isabelle Allendale, "If paid at all. Women remain vulnerable because they have no economic independence and are constantly threatened by exploitation, violence and abuse. If a woman is empowered, her children and family will be better off". $20 are given to men's programs for every dollar given to women's programs.

Under a mantle of secrecy, the most powerful and richest people in the world, joined in an unprecedented secret meeting, at the home of the president of the Manhatton medical school, at Rockefeller University, at the invitation of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and David Rockefeller.

"We came together to see if we could join together to do more to help, in the light of the world economic downturn", said one of the attendees. "This group is very committed to philanthropy". It was reported the agenda for the five hour afternoon/dinner meeting was to consider ways to use their considerable financial resources to come to the aid of people in the midst of financial crisis.

The invitees included billionaire moguls such as, Michael Bloomberg, Ted Turner, George Soros, Peter Petersen and Eli Broad. All invitees were known for their philanthropic achievements. It would seem that Oprah Winfrey was the only female billionaire to attend the secret meeting.

Yet for all the moves forward in the equality race, women are still way behind the eight ball.

•Women equate to less than 1% of departmental heads, editors, media owners, but a third of the working journalists

•80% of purchasing decisions are made by women

•Women do 66% of the world's work but only receive 10% of world’s income

•Women own less than 1% of the world's assets

•Globally women comprise 42% of Internet users

•Women are 66% of the 1 billion plus, illiterate adults who have no access to basic education, are women

•Worldwide women account for the majority of people over the age of 60 years old

•Only 21% of all news subjects are on females

Finally – a piece of trivia: Women use 20,000 words a day, compared to 7,000 used by men.
